We were so excited for warmer weather. No more jumpers in the evening, no more socks at bedtime. We were set for our Broome adventure, filled with sunshine, beach, crocs and dinosaur footprints.
Our over excited eagerness, was met with a sobering slap in the face.
As we were setting up our camper trailer, the manager of the caravan park came looking for us. Felix had scraped his bike along side a brand new car of another guest – suddenly his gumtree bargain had become the most expensive piece of equipment we owned. We were also told to lock everything up at night due to recent theft and while its safe to swim at some the beaches, keep an eye for crocs as there was a sighting just yesterday at Cable Beach. We were now, in debt and filled with fear. This is not how I wanted to remember Broome.
The next morning, to shake it all off, we set off in search of dinosaur footprints and also discovered Riddell Beach with its red dirt that rolled into the ocean. That evening, we met up with some friends we made in Coral Bay and enjoyed the sunset over the beach, with camels walking on the horizon. The days continued to get better. We strolled through Broome’s Town Center Markets, filled with local art, music, stores a plenty and the best cinnamon donuts on the west coast.
We explored Quondong Point and James Price Point, where rugged red cliffs sat on the beach and offered great fishing spots. The water was beckoning and the urge to swim was so very tempting. We decided to see what cable beach was like. The water was warm, clear and gentle. It was the best swim in a long time!
Our friends from earlier had gone on a fishing charter and came back buried in fish. That night we caught another sunset together – this time we witnessed the epic Stairway To The Moon, which is a great show put on by the full moon and low tidal plains – and enjoyed an amazing fish feast. Our hearts and bellies were full; we were now ready to leave Broome on good terms.
