Boodjamulla – Lawn Hill

We dipped our oars into the deep, clear water. The water lilies swayed as we pushed past them and the ripples over the water stirred the reflections of the rich greenery and palm trees.

Lawn Hill gorge, in the Boodjamulla National Park, is a green oasis in a barren outback. To get here, we passed kilometers of dry fields and cattle farms. The National Park was bursting with greenery and a deep river gorge.

We saw water birds, fish swimming beneath us, crocs resting on rocks and butterflies aplenty. The scenery changed from a wide open river, floating between tall rock walls, narrow paths between thickly growing palms, waterfalls and a sheltered waterhole with rapids off to one side.

It was also quiet. Oh so quiet. We could hear the water dripping of our oars, the beating of dragonfly wings and the echo of birds calling to each other in the distance. We broke the silence many a times, but when we did manage a piece of it, it was very serene.

Before I paint a picture of tranquility – lets be real, when traveling with kids, there’s no down time.

As soon as we got back to our camp site at Adels Grove, it was back in the water, swinging off tree swings and diving into icy water, searching for rapids by the creek, running through the grove of trees, all before picking up some hot chips from the local shack and trying to fish off a tree in search of the elusive barra!
